Why Are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

Patients are often curious why routine dental checkups and cleanings are important, especially if they aren’t in any pain. Simply put, these visits are designed to catch oral health problems in the earliest stages, before they cause you any discomfort or require an emergency visit to our office. Additionally, the examination allows Dr. Anderson to screen for non-dental problems, such as oral cancer. These points already make your routine visits beneficial to your oral and overall health, but the cleanings serve an important purpose too: they remove stubborn plaque and tartar that your toothbrush and floss can’t.

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

Although checkups look a little different from patient to patient, there are a few steps that are applicable across the board. For example, if you’re new to our office or it’s been some time since your last X-rays, we will take new ones so Dr. Anderson can compare those with the findings from his oral exam. If he notices anything concerning, like an existing cavity, then he will share which treatment options he recommends, answer any questions you have, and create your treatment plan. Otherwise, it will be time for your cleaning!

The cleaning portion of your visit is designed to remove the debris that your toothbrush and floss have left behind. Using special tools, a member of our team will meticulously (and gently!) remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and clean along your gumline. They will also floss between each tooth, polish your teeth, and share any tips they have on how you can keep your smile healthy between now and your next visit.
